Point well taken, Kathleen. I think that it is helpful to screen for
predisposing factors, ie antibiotic use mother or baby, hx of yeast
problems, etc when considering other possibilities. If hx is negative and
the situation unusual, then by all means, refer to the dermatologist
quickly! I don't want moms to suffer unduly. I haven't seen impetigo
personally but have seen slides of it, and it looks different in its
classic form; however, we seem to get a lot of "non-classic" stuff, don't
we! The only difficulty I see in such referrals is the managed health
care system, which will deny many mothers direct access to the best help.
If I were the mom, I would have to go through my primary caregiver first,
and referrals to specialists are hard to obtain! Financially, this may be
a drawback to an otherwise ideal solution.
