By more food, I meant more than the ADA reccomendations for diabetics (like
a 2000 cal or 2200 cal  diet)  The needs of the breastfeeding mother (500
extra cal a day is average, I think) to produce milk puts more food on the
diabetics plate than the diabetic is used to.  There is usually a balance
between a diabetic's caloric intake and her insulin needs.  The lactating
diabetic finds the opposite is true.  ie: more calories, less insulin.

I don't know if the why is really understood.  Why would a diabetic mom need
less insulin and more calories?  It may have to do with hormonal interplay
of milk production, oxytocin and pitocin.  Maybe there is an effect of
prolactin ?  Anyone else know the reason?  Thanks, Pat in SNJ
