I collect children's Christmas books and search diligently for ones
portraying Mary nursing. Two that we've enjoyed over the years are: Mary's
First Christmas by Walter Wangerin Jr, with lovely paintings of Mary and
Joseph by the baby Jesus in the manger-it looks like they are lying beside
him, and The Story of Christmas by Jane Ray with 3 pictures of Mary nursing.
I think I got the latter from Candlewick Press, a wonderful children's book
distributor. FWIW, some scholars say that mangers were huge and would have
been like a bed for the family, not the dinky ones you see in nativity sets.
These were feeding troughs for large animals--not Chihuahuas :-).
Co-sleeping was the cultural norm: "Then the one inside answers, 'Don't
bother me. The door is already locked, and my children are with me in bed. I
can't get up and give you anything.'Luke 11:6-8.

I think there may be a thread in the archives about this, and there are
definitely threads about children's books promoting bf.

Warmly,
Anna Swisher, MBA, IBCLC
