Judy Markey and Kathy O'Malley are morning talk show hosts on WGN radio
720AM in Chicago. This morning they commented on the Massachusetts
legislature's ban on formula gift bag giveaways. Judy brought up the
subject because she thought it was a shame to take this away from
mothers. Kathy warned her not to go there - - people are strong in
their convictions about breastfeeding.

The phone lines lit up; the first mother was an adoptive mother of twins
who was dependent on formula. Kathy asked if she knew that she could
have attempted to BF these babies and the mother said she didn't know
that was possible.

Then the BF advocates got on. I got in 2cents worth about this being a
public health issue which gave it status in the legislature (they
wondered why lawmakers would care to get involved in this issue). I
also got in a word about the ethical issue of hospitals promoting a
second rate product that was unhealthy. They asked if I was a BF-ing
mother and I replied that I was an RN working with mothers. That ended
my segment with them.

That was followed by a mother who was nursing her 4 month old and she
was quite eloquent about how wonderful BF-ing was for her baby.

A man from my church called to tell me he had heard the radio discussion
and was convinced it should happen here, too.

So this news from Massachusetts is rippling into the Midwest. Bravo!
