One distressing observation during our (last summer's) trip to Europe was
the extensive use of pacifiers in newborns, young infants, older infants,
toddlers and young children (many at least 3-4 years of age!)

I have also noticed a number of young children (locally) who attempt to
talk around pacifiers, resulting in totally unintelligible speech. Makes
me wonder how many of these children may need speech therapy because of
poor enunciation and/or to correct enunciation patterns altered as a result
of trying to "talk around" those rubber things in the mouth. In some
cases, those plugs are removed ONLY to put something else in the
mouth--like food. As soon as that is accomplsihed and chewed, in goes the
pacifier again.... so sad
