Hi all,
I agree with your post, Melissa. Other things that may be helpful
are bible verses about kindness and patience to children, God tenderly
caring for his children and holding them to his bosom. I have asked a
few parents if they enjoy being forced to do things, and none of us do,
I sure don't. Logical conclusion is that babies don't like being
forced into things either, such as a schedule. I ask mothers how they
would feel if the dietary people walked in to pick up their meal tray
'It's been 15 minutes, ma'am, you're done.' And the woman may say,
'But I got a phone call, I'm not done yet.' Usually this is enough
said. I have found it helpful to explain the humanity and personhood of
the baby with this story: "I'm not sure what I thought my first baby
was, a pet or a task to take care of. But some friends were over and
spoke of Andrew's blankets and Andrew's bottles like he was a real
person who owned things. Light bulb moment for me! He IS a real person
with his own feelings and thoughts and needs."
(We adopted him and I bottle fed. At 12 mos old I finally told him to
hold his own bottle. I should have put him on a cup but didn't know
better at the time.)
