I was at a class yesterday and was told by a WIC supervisor that we are
discouraging the use of breast shells because they may cause premature labor
in the expectant mother. I have never heard of this. Is there documentation?
She played down breast shells all the way around and I tried to sit quietly
and keep my mouth shut but simply could not. I used breast shells as a tool
to successfully breastfeed six of my seven children. If I would have had them
with the first I would have been able to have nursed her also! I had flat
nipples and my OBGYN doctor never told me. I had latching problems that
eventually led to me switching to formula, this made me more determined to
find the answer to successful nursing with the next baby. The answer for me
was breast shells. If I can help those 10% of Moms that have similar problems
and can use breast shells as a tool than why should I discourage their use.
Needless to say I could not keep quiet.
