I find that a number of moms already have the PNS before delivery.
Then if baby has a problem and they need to use the pump to get the
supply going, they are reluctant to rent. I would always point out
that some experts find that the Lactina is better when establishing
supply and the PNS great once supply is going and baby is also
nursing. They use the Lactina in hospital and can rent same for a
reasonable cost (especially since they already have the kit from
hospital use). If they are reluctant to rent and prefer to use the
PNS they already have, I recommend they bring it in and use it at
least once before going home to see how mom likes it and if she
feels it is being as effective. If they still insist on the PNS, I
recommend they keep the Lactina "in the back of their minds" and if
supply doesn't seem to be keeping up, to reconsider. I also suggest
they bring their kit when visiting baby and use the Lactina while at
the hospital. I have found that some moms do just fine with the PNS
even with several weeks of pumping while others do better continuing
with the Lactina. I would not recommend going out and buying a PNS
right away if mom needs to be pumping initially, but will give her
these options and suggest a "try it and see" approach when she
already has one.
One of my biggest frustrations is the mom who plans to stay home
with her baby and only foresees an occasional use for a pump who
starts out with the "Cadillac".
