I have a mom that is 12 weeks postpartum. She is exclusively breastfeeding baby. No problems with latch, baby breastfeeding well and gaining weight. Approx. 2 weeks ago mom began experiencing breast pain that she describes as a "severe shooting pain" in both breast. No damage to nipples but nipples appeared red, shiny. First thought of a candida infection but baby has no signs/symptoms. Mom called back today, states has a red raised rash on one breast, nipples still red and shiney, has constant unbearable itching sensation in both breasts. States her OB/GYN treated her with Diflucan X 1 dose. She is still breastfeeding despite severe pain but now only on nipples. I have thought of eczema, herpes, candida, staph. She is coming in tomorrow for consult. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks for your input.
