In the USA we fight with these formula discharge bags and here in my area it
is exacerbated at the OB's offices.
During the prenatal visits many of the OB offices allow formula companies to
have sign up list for the expectant mothers and one of the items these
mothers get is a "coupon" for a free diaper bag when they are discharged from
the hospital.
Many mothers come to the hospital waving these coupons, asking for their
"free" bags.
Our LC dept. is trying very hard to stop these bags from being given out but
the staff have a point that they feel they cannot deny these women a bag if
they ask for them.
(We do have them pull the formula out but that is not the point.)
So here is my question; with the HIPAA regulations now coming out, aren't the
OB offices in noncompliance when they have these lists sitting out in the
open for other people to see? According to HIPAA regs, names and personal
information about patients are not to be in an area where the public can see.
I wish ACOG would work harder on their own group to stop this practice and it
certainly would help us in the hospitals.
I will never understand what is such the big deal about these stupid, cheap
bags. What ever happened to getting diaper bags for baby showers?!
