 nothing for 1st  24 hours, then one feeding of water (maybe sugar water, don't remember) via bottle, then THE schedule, one breast for 3 min q. 4 hrs, then next day, one breast for 5 min, then each breast for 5 min the day after,,,,,stays were 7 midnights (!) so daughter born at 10 pm was 7 days and daughter born at 12:30 am stayed 8 days.  This was 1959 and 1960.  Pat in SNJ

PS. No help was offered on how to hold baby for latch, no one stayed in room to see what we did. So of course I held baby in bottle feeding position and expected her to turn her head, ouch!
