Nikki, congratulations to you for taking advantage of a great forum and starting some much needed education!

For those who are looking for Nikki's spot on the time counter, she's at 5 hours and 36 minutes (not 5 min 6 sec).

According to my boss, the insurances companies are beginning to get the message. Although the cost of a lactation consult is bundled into the capitalization, including our costs has enabled the hospital to negotiate a higher reimbursement rate for the total bundle. We started "charging" $28/mom visited a few years ago. As they've looked more closely at how long we actually spend with each mom, they've gradually raised our cost. In the most recent rounds of negotiation, lactation consults were calculated in at $90/visit---not per mom. So follow-up visits also get a $90 price tag.

It may be important to know that this is a hospital where we only see the moms who request or whose MD or RN requests. We're not yet staffed to see every mom, but as the funding reimbursement grows, we have high hopes.

Go, Nikki, go!
