The medical students where I teach (at Ohio University) are currently
studying lactation physiology and breastfeeding management. One of them
asked me a question I can't answer. Do any of you know the answer?

"When the nipple is stimulated and milk is removed from the breast, the
hypothalamus inhibits the release of dopamine; this lower level of dopamine
stimulates the release of prolactin and causes milk production. My question
is about anti-depressant drugs. SSRS's are targeted at the reuptake of
serotonin and don't have any proven effects on dopamine. However, MAOIs do -
and while not a popular choice for antidepressants these days- I just wanted
to know if they have any effect on milk letdown."

Thanks for your help. It's always a pleasure when medical students show an
active interest in breastfeeding so I'd like to get this curious student an
accurate answer.
