How naive does Nestle think we are? Any health professional employed by a
commercial company, whether it be a manufacturer of drugs, formula or
medical appliances has a conflict of interests.
Referring to my postings of a few months ago, Nestle has bought out our
local formula company, Materna and they employ a "panel of experts" who run
an information service on infant feeding. Was it by chance that some of the
names on that panel are of pediatricians who were on a committee that
changed our Ministry of Health guidelines for exclusive breastfeeding from 6
months to four months!
If only the Ministry would finance a "hot line" for breastfeeding
counsellors to give round-the clock information and crisis intervention.
They do not see the long-term financial benefits (not to mention the
humanitarian issues). Just think that if almost every baby born in 2010 was
breastfeed exclusively for at least six months, preferably longer, not only
would we have a drastic reduction in childhood diseases but we would have a
healthier generation of ageing adults in another fifty or sixty years. Less
obesity, diabetes, heart diseas, cholesteral issues etc etc. - how much
would this save the health system.
