Mardrey Swenson reports on Ventria who are making a rice product genetically
modified to contain human lactoferrin, and asks:
"Now if they can make this, believing and reporting that these human milk
substances reduce diarrhea, why can't we get more HCPs to stop telling
breastfeeding mothers when the child is sick with diarrhea to give a
solution such as pedialyte???"

The answer is that a lot of so-called health professionals use commercial
materials given them by sales reps as their major source of information on
treatments for many many common and not so common ailments. There aren't
many sales reps handing out sample packs of human milk along with post-it
notes, pens, keychains, desk calendars, beanie caps with propellers or
whatever the latest trinket rage is, carrying the logo of a lactating
breast. The breastmilk manufacturers do not contribute to the coffers of
the pediatricians' organization the way that the manufacturers of Pedialyte
may.

Here in Norway it is a chronic source of irritation to me that, while the
midwives' association invariably provides space free of charge to the
breastfeeding mothers' organization when it has its national meetings, the
health visitors charge the organization per square meter of display space at
the same rate they charge manufacturers of breastmilk substitutes - this, in
the interest of 'fairness'. And they wonder why the *breastfeeding
organization* is so *antagonistic*. Go figure.
