Esther -- don't back down. You are right, right, right to kick and scream
about being asked to teach BF at a health fair booth paid for by a formula
co.!

All IBCLCs must adhere to the Code of Ethics promulgated by the IBLCE. These
are our "MUST" rules ... not to be confused with the ILCA Standards of
Practice, which tell us how we "SHOULD" practice. When you violate a MUST,
you are subject to IBLCE disciplinary sanctions. You could (in theory) lose
your credential.

IBLCE feels so strongly about *not* having IBCLCs cave to formula co.
pressures (that old "it is here to stay" argument ....) that it passed,
effective Nov. 1, 2000, new Code of Ethics Principle 24. It says: "IBCLCs
must adhere to those provisions of the International Cod of Marketing of
Breastmilk Substitutes which pertain to health workers."

And you still would have been right, right, right on Oct. 31, 2000. Other
Code of Ethics Principles covering this might include:
No. 4 "Conduct herself/himself with honesty, integrity and fairness."
No. 5 "Remaiin free of conflict of interest while fulfilling the objectives
and maintaining the integrity of the lactation consultant profession."
No. 17 "Disclose any financial or other conflicts of interest in relevant
organizations providing goods or services. Ensure that professional
judgment is not influenced by any commercial considerations."

It is unconscionable that you are being pressured to serve at this booth.
