Subject: diabetes in 23 month old?

Tracey and other Lnetters: What were this baby's symptoms? I have one
with low weight gain, frequent feedings, constant requests for water (since
age 1, now age 23 months), history of yeast infections. Does this sound
like juvenile diabetes to you? The doctor won't test because she says it's
so rare in infants or children under 4 years of age.

YES YES YES Please run don't walk to the nearest pharmacy and buy a bottle
of test strips for urine. YOu don't need a prescription. Better yet find a
friend who is diabetic and do a blood glucose check. The most common times
for JD to appear are around 2, 7, 14, and early 20's. The sad thing about a
toddler with JD is that it often goes undiagnosed until the child is in a
crisis. (read death....) My 7 year old was diagnosed when his sugar levels
were in the 400's, had lost 10 lbs looked emaciated, drank 4 quarts in 6
hours. Doc who let me bring him in said initially he didn't think it was JD
but after confirmation with the blood and urine tests agreed and sent us
directly to the hospital. There's no excuse not to at least run a simple
test to rule out such a serious condition. If I can provide any support,
I'm here.
