Beth, you asked,

how do you begin to influence a mother that does not plan on breastfeeding,
given the multiple advantages that have been proven for not only the infant but
the mother as well?

I strongly agree with Nina who spoke of societal influences on US mothers and
the so very important need for helping and supporting mothers to breastfeed.
I'd also like to add that it is helpful to meet the mom where she is
(resistant at the moment) and exploring with her her reasons for not wanting to
breastfeed. These may well include discomfort with nursing in public, or fear of
nipple pain, for example, and these concerns can then be addressed and
information given. Also, connectioning her with mother-to-mother breastfeeding support
groups, lactation consultants, and the like can provide her with some of the
tools to attempt to breastfeed. Sometimes, letting moms know that they can
just try it without a lengthy commitment, relieves the pressure they feel, and
then hey, alot of moms like it and get hooked, so to speak.
Remaining non judgemental is key. Lots of support and empathy go a long way.
