This is definately not always true, in my experience. I have had mothers call
me b/c their husbands or someone else wanted them to nurse, and they needed
to be able to say "they tried everything, even an LC, so it wasn't their
fault". But they undermined themselves every step of the way. Usually, I
could figure out what was going on pretty quickly, but not always. I remember
one mom who was very angry that her dh expected her to bf, like his first
wife had done. He was very supportive and couldn't understand what was going
on with her. She told me she resented being compared to his first wife, but
"she really wanted bf to work out". She weaned her baby after a few days,
even though she got through her difficulties. This is just one example of
quite a few similar scenarios. I do not assume a mother really wants to bf
just b/c she calls me, but if she says she does, I do everything I can, as if
she means it.
