After spending 30 minutes stooped over a mom's bed trying to get one
of these critters on the breast, I promised myself I'd come back and
see if any of these great minds had some tried and true tricks to get
tongue suckers on the breast. I've never found it to be a long term
problem (guess that good breastmilk is pretty reinforcing if it can
break months' long habits fairly quickly!), but it's a dilly to work
with in the beginning. The best I've managed is to stop the tongue
sucking immediately each time I see it by breaking the suction with
my finger, and to just keep stroking those little lips and waiting
patiently for the gape. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Also, it's been my experience that tongue suckers are almost always
black. Rarely do I see the behavior in white or oriental babes. Any
ideas why??

TIA, Terry Hadley IBCLC
