Ilene,
I have heard some nursery nurses where I work say they've tried the same
thing (rarely). They swear it often works and the baby gets milk. I try to
get my boss to carry Medela nipple shields for the occasional client who
could benefit, but no luck. I have been employed here over a year and do not
have shields so I make due w/o them and so far haven't really needed them.
Very rarely I might send a mom to purchase, for example had a tongue-tied
baby and mom w/ inverted nipples. But I say to the nurses not to do it, I am
worried the baby could suck it in and become obstructed. I have heard of
babies choking on 'homemade' pacifiers made w/ bottle nipples stuffed w/
cotton. I would scare them w/ this.
