Esther,

I always suggest waiting for at LEAST one month. I discuss engorgement,
and letting the baby have as much breast as he wants during this time
when bodily fluids are readjusting, milk production is stabilising, and
both baby and mother are LEARNING to breastfeed.

After one month, I remind them not to replace nursing with pumping,
since pumps are not as effective as babies. They don't want to
jeopardise milk supply. I suggest they wake early to pump before baby
wakes, and remain awake to pump after baby is sleeping.

It usually does not take long for a stay-at-home mom to realize she is
creating more work, not getting a break, by pumping for others to feed.
