Chris,
We all know that refusing to consider something because it is rare is
folly.  I know 2 kids who were diagnosed with IDDM before age 4.
Another sign of juvenile diabetes is that the child suddenly refuses to
walk and cries in pain.
        Mom could always use the classical test for diabetes mellitus- see if
the urine is sweet...
