Grace O'Connor wrote of her aspirations to work towards becoming an IBCLC. I was touched, Grace, that you shared your hopes and plans with us all on Lactnet, and that the first response you had has already made some helpful points.
Years ago, most pioneers of the IBCLC profession were in the same situation as you are now - young mothers who had discovered breastfeeding in a bottle-feeding culture, who grew as persons through learning to meet a baby's needs and fend off the negative comments, and who realised there was a need for well-trained people to provide expertise and support for breastfeeding women and their babies, and provide *accurate* information. It is so exciting for you, being at the start of the path.
Do read the IBLCE information, including on their website, become familiar with the textbooks (you are sure to have a favourite among them), keep on asking for advice and mentoring. As a previous poster suggested - if you have the opportunity - diversify your training and background. There are lots of options. As time passes, you'll become one of the experienced lactation consultants, able in turn to mentor others. (Yes, really!)
This field is always interesting, always challenging, as there are so many variations to the normal, let alone so many variations in what is not. Add to that the many factors that have a bearing on any mother and baby's experience - physiological, anatomical, cultural, psychological, and so much more - and there is so much more to learn, for the whole of our lives. No wonder so many of us are hooked!
All the best, Grace. I wish you a happy and productive preparation period, and a fulfilling profession. IT is great to see your enthusiasm and realistic approach to getting started.
