As regards the thread started by Dawn Staudt-Vanek on Monday:

The best way to avoid the common problem of a last-minute scramble for CERPs
is to start collecting them early in the five years. Then file them where
you won't lose them. I recertified last year and had no trouble finding
CERPs to get them in well ahead of the early deadline that was introduced.
I'm regularly asked by other IBCLCs for advice on finding CERPs when the
deadline is coming up, as many IBCLCs do have enough CERPS, but haven't kept
the evidence early in the 5-year period.

There are other ways of gaining CERPs, besides conference attendance -
though conferences are a superb way to up-dating knowledge and skills and
networking, too. There are also webinairs, e.g. by USLCA. Independent Study
Modules (ISMs) are available from ILCA, ABA and other organisations. An ISM
can help boost the number of CERPs if just a few are required - at the same
time, providing an excellent educational opportunity. Anyone trying to
accumulate CERPs for recertification next year and beyond may want to check
with IBLCE how to gain CERPs for participating in a study group, for
in-service education, for publications.

If you publish an article in a peer-reviewed journal, there are generous
CERPs allocated. IBCLCs whose main language isn't English may find
publishing in a journal in their own language/s is a good way to make up the
required number of CERPs. The IBLCE websites for any of the three regions is
the first place to look for ideas.

Finally, remember the purpose of CERPs - to ensure that the IBCLC is
receiving the appropriate Continuing Professional Education to practice the
profession competently and safely, protect the public, and maintain the
standards and reputation of the profession.

In summary:

1) start the accumulation of CERPs early

2) keep records of your CERPs and file them where you can find them

3) consider a variety of modes of earning CERPS

I am getting my paperwork ready to do my 5 year renewal by CERPS. I realized
that for 2012 the early date for paperwork submission is the end of February
or you can pay an additional fee and submit by the end of July deadline. In
reviewing the deadlines, it looks like the this is the first year with the
earlier submission dates. Does anyone else see the problem here? Because of
the change, the only way to use the 2012 ILCA conference CERPS is to miss
the early bird deadline and pay more money on top of the what I consider
high conference fees.

Let me know your opinions and if there is any options for getting deadlines
changed to the previous dates.

Thanks, Dawn RN, IBCLC
