Dear Colleagues:

This section of a recent post made me curious: "In that same vein, I can
imagine that using nipple stimulation/breast pumps to get labor started
could have averse effects on a mom with this hormonal challenge. I had one
mom tell me she was so mad at the use of a breast pump during her labor
that she refused to breastfeed."

Nipple stimulation has never been shown to start labor....I've known of
plenty of people, (both maternity staff and lay people) that have tried.
Orgasms aren't reliable starts to labor either...says she whose last
pregnancy went to nearly 44 weeks despite frequent home attempts to start
things going.

Are facilities really trying to start labor with breast pumps? That sounds
awful.

Also, another question. If pregnancy milk is made under the influence of
the placenta, how could pumping for the last 3 months of pregnancy increase
the amount of pituitary-driven milk in lactogenesis II?

warmly,
