Also, has anyone else ever read or heard that there is an *enzyme* present
in the saliva of teething babies that can make a mother's nipples sore???

I have also come across this as Nursing Mothers' folklore but have not heard of a rationalisation. It has been suggested that washing the breast & nipple area after feeds with sodium bicarbonate solution may be helpful and I have occasionally suggested this to mothers but have not had much feedback about the results.
