Greetings..... A brief re-introduction before I ask your advice. I am
an hospital based IBCLC and former LLL Leader. I have been a great fan
of Lactnet, and have been lurking for a while due to a busy schedule and
no computer at work. My question involves a Mom with a 10 week old who
has had sore nipples off and on since baby was born. She's been treated
(baby, too) for candida with diflucan with good results. When I
observed a feeding this week, Mom reports baby does a lot of clamping,
with resulting nipple pain for Mom. Latch and positioning looked good,
but when baby released her latch, I noticed the imprint of her upper
gums on Mom's areola. I don't recall seeing this before. My suggestion
to Mom was cranio-sacral therapy for baby (Mom reported the clamping
wasn't bad in the AM, but got worse as the day progressed.) I also
suggested a more upright position for baby to try to alleviate the
pressure from the upper gum. Does anyone have other thoughts or
suggestions for this Mom?
