He's a local Philadelphia radio talk-show host who does a lot of stuff on
what he calls common-sense parenting.  He was on a live TV show I was on
Wednesday night discussing "How long is too long to nurse?"  While he is
very supportive of breastfeeding, he says 3-4 years is the maximum upper
limit, and that the mom in Illinois who may lose custody of her son for
nursing him until he was 8 is just wrong/crazy, etc.

He took great exception to my trying to talk about my research suggesting
2.5 to 7.0 years is the basic range for humans as a species, and that lots
of cultures nurse their kids for many many years.  He implied that I was
making up the anthropological research data.  He said he wasn't interested
in research, that common sense told anyone that a child shouldn't nurse past
3 or 4 years.  He said the World Health Organization (and me) had "an
agenda" -- as though it was a bad thing to have an agenda, even if the
agenda was World Health.  He also accused me of harming the cause of
breastfeeding promotion by being too radical and turning people off to
breastfeeding entirely.

I would like those of you who know me, and know my work, to drop Mr.
Giardano a BRIEF, POLITE, NICE note and let him know how much my work has
furthered the cause of breastfeeding in the US, including empowering lots of
women to nurse for longer than they might have otherwise.  Thanks friends.
