Dear Dr. Jennifer,
I think your suggestions to stop the antibiotic and the other
suggestions for encouraging this 9-month-old back to breast are good ones. I have one
suggestion that might get breastmilk into this sick little guy. I'm guessing
that mom is pumping to maintain a supply, so baby will have something to
reward him when he finally gets interested in nursing again. Mom might freeze
that pumped breastmilk into a popsicle (I think it's called iceblock in some
areas of the world), then hold the popsicle and see if she can get baby to lick it
or suck on it. If he has a fever, perhaps he has a sore throat as well?
Then maybe the cold would feel good to him. Even if he doesn't have a sore
throat, the novelty of the cold popsicle might be enough to interest him.
