The study by Penny Simkin was published in two parts in the journal BIRTH several years ago, under the title "Just another day in a woman's life?". Penny was not a doula for these women. They had all attended her antenatal classes and had given her their written accounts of the births shortly afterwards. About 20 years later, she contacted many of these women and invited them to participate in the study. They were requested not to re-read their original accounts, and to write new ones. Those who accepted the invitation are the basis for the study.
She found that negative aspects of the births were more prominent in the later accounts, and that the recall of details was very stable, especially verbatim recall of remarks made in the birth room.
The articles are fascinating. If you aren't already familiar with Penny's work, it's high time to get acquainted.
