i emailed joy privately but i will summarize here that i agree with her
totally, but there are still instances in which there is no breastmilk nor
access to the mother. the baby i keep occasionally is reluctant to nurse when
he is hungry because i don't have much milk, and he doesn't come regularly
enough to build up the supply. so, he will nurse when sleepy but not when
hungry. he has started solids, but not enough to make up for milk. so, when
his mother has not been able to pump enough milk (and that's another story,
but i can't go over to her house and force her to pump, although i try), i
have three choices, formula, cows milk, or a screaming baby.

it is also better than the use of apple and other juices, which seems to be
so prevalent that mothers think their babies "must" have juice every day.

of course my children think they are allergic to water, too, if they can
manage to cajole me into juice or milk.
