Kerry,
Great post. I absolutely loved what you had to say.
It does seem that breastfeeding has a complicating factor that many other 
social change movements don't, in that it involves  individual physical 
and psychological processes and demands that are not present in most other 
situations. If the gay couple next door adopts a baby, that is not going 
to effect my daily life, in the way that a choice to breastfeed will. 
Since the message to breastfeed automatically comes with the message "this 
is best for the baby" doesn't it then follow that someone rejecting 
breastfeeding would feel anger toward the messenger. Even if we remove 
stridency and passion from our own rhetoric, wouldn't there still be a 
natural tendency among formula feeders to displace feelings onto the 
person or people who have made them feel uncomfortable about their choice. 
I'm not bringing this up because I disagree with you in any way, just 
because it's something I struggle with and don't have the answer to.
