It sure sounds like mastitis to me, so that is a logical place to start. I
would attempt to culture the thick mucus-like discharge. I would recommend
that the mother be prescribed a course of antibiotics since she has the
discharge and systemic symptoms (fever is not necessary for mastitis
diagnosis, although it does occur frequently), along with rest and comfort
measures typical for mastitis treatment.
