What could this be ? I saw a three week old infant this week with a white
thick coat on her tongue. She is exclusively breastfeeding. Does not use
pacifier. I saw the mother for another purpose and just happened to notice
the tongue. It was very obvious . The mother said her first child had had
this as an infant and she was seen by ped who r/o yeast. There were no
other signs on the oral mucosa just as there are none with this three week
old --just this white thick coating on the tongue. She said the ped told it
was within normal limits and not to worry about it . She was given Nystatin
anyway which she used .She said the patch was there for several weeks. Did
not affect nursing at least not in retrospect.
I did watch as this baby nurse there was some inefficient smacking and
clucking and mother states baby does not empty breast well on rt side and
that nipple has been tender.
I encouraged her to see ped and get yeast r/o and will give yeast care
protocol . Dislike creating a problem if there is not a problem --but it
did not look right to me.
Seen anything like this --that was not yeast?
