Yeah, Laurie, I was "in that box" for many, many years, and from
retirement's vantage point, can challenge others to rethink (outside of
it) how things might be reprioritized when there is no real medical
emergency!

How well I remember being in the DR and hoping this kid wouldn't be born
for a few more minutes so the nurse from the next shift would have the
responsibility of all that "stuff" to do!

I had a supervisor that engrained it into us that we HAD to complete so
many of those things (charting of time, position, repair, etc., Apgar,
weight, eye drops, pit injection, etc., etc.) before we went off duty, or
it was a sign of laziness and irresponsibility!

Heaven forbid that I should let a little bonding desire get in my way of
proving I was a conscientious nursie!  :-) I'm sort of glad all that's
behind me now!

It would feel like I was "committing schizophrenia" on myself to try to
complete the routine tasks yet empathize with the prime importance of the
immediate long bonding interlude that moms and babes deserve. How do
others deal with that?
