Brenda mentions the ABM new protocol:

"Information regarding long-term effects of marijuana use by the
breastfeeding mother on the infant remains insufficient to recommend complete
abstention from breastfeeding initiation or continuation based on the scientific
evidence at this time". It also states, "at this time, althought he data
are not strong enough to recommend not breastfeeding with any marijuana use,
we urge caution". >>

Brenda, I've recently completed a pretty extensive literature review on
the use of marijuana and breastfeeding for a lecture for our advanced course.
Basically, I completely concur with the ABM on this....based on the
literature, you have to weigh the risks of formula feeding against the risks of
occasional mj use. And depending on how much the mother is smoking, the
risks of formula feeding may far outweigh the risks of mj. Given that
medical mj is legal in many states, that puts it in the category of other
"drugs." Given that recreational mj is legal in at least 4 states, that puts it
in the category of alcohol and tobacco. It's a very hard question to
answer, but one I think your hospital needs to look at -- not just lump it in
with cocaine, heroin, and psychoactive bath salts.
