Many thanks for raising this issue. I am keen to see some discussion on it.
Having spkoen to many people (not just mothers) about infant feeding, it
seems that the decision about how to feed a baby is based on many factors.
You mentioned the health issues a mother would/should consider. But other
issues she considers include social, behavioural and structural ones eg how
does she feel about breastfeeding in front of others, outside the home, on
return to work? what support will she get from her partner and others close
to her? what has she heard and/or seen about breastfeeding? about bottle
feeding? which method is easiest, most convenient, best suited for her
lifestyle and that of her family? etc etc.
