This afternoon, on the heels of LN thread on Technology and Brutality, I
glanced through my latest issue of JOGNN.

If you have access to it, it is worth perusing.

On the definitely non-technical side is "Relief of Breast Engorgement for
the Sabbath-Observant Jewish Woman" by Ilana Chertok ,RN,BSN,CCE. Among
the information and references are several from JHL re: the use of
cabbage leaves. Certainly enough info in there to point out to the
techies there are other ways!

The Clinical Issues section begins with a guest editorial entitled
"Technology and Family-Centered Perinatal Care: Conflict or Synergy" by
Peggy Gordin RNC, MS, FAAN, and Beverley H. Johnson RN. I have not read
it yet, but the title is surely provocative!

Another article in this section is entitles "Following the Learning
Curve: The Evolution of Kinder, Gentler Neonatal Respiratory Technology."
by Terri Lockridge, RNC, MS. The title, at least, sounds promising. I
plan to update my understanding on this too, but I confess I will be
searching especially for any recognition of a connection with oral
aversive habits.

I am saving the best for last. Also in this section is "Selecting Pumps
for Breastfeedng Mothers" by Marie Biancuzzo, RN, MS.
I quickly scanned the chapter about pumps in her book to see if it might
be a duplicate.

NO! Additional information! A very clear explanation of the physics and
specifics about definitions of parts and the various designs for pump
flanges that is going to have me revisiting the article with a fine tooth
comb to really clarify for me a great many points that have escaped me
thus far in personal explanations from my pump-rental colleagues.

I recommend it highly to anyone of any discipline for better insight into
choosing and/or recommending pumps to mothers. The one thing I may have
missed in her article is the reference she makes in her book to the part
the milk-ejection reflex plays in efficient milk removal.

What a joy to see the bibliography packed full of the references by
authors whose names are so familiar and respected by us in the LC
community. I believe they call it "Interdisciplinary"!

Hats off, Marie.

Jean
