Maybe this is not lactation related, but I have to comment that I had a
couple under my care the other night who believed in this philosophy. The
father wanted mom to limit feedings to prevent the baby from getting too
"attached" and "spoiled", and held the baby tight when she cried (refusing
to give her to mom), because she had nursed just an hour ago. They had this
CD that was supposed to help the baby get to sleep, so mom wouldn't "get in
the habit of nursing the new baby to sleep" (that's what the CD was sold to
do-- maybe the company has expanded to include these types of things). I
tried to do some teaching, let them know that nothing short of mom's sweet,
warm milk and the security of her parent's loving arms would get her to
sleep well in these first few weeks; that she needed to be offered a feeding
and comfort every time she cried (to assure a good milk supply)-- they
looked at me as if I was crazy! They were bottle feeding by the next day..
obvious control issues, here.
Thanks so much for the article reference:
