Actually, we see this quite a bit where I work, but usually it isn't a lag
in milk production that's causing the problem for these moms. With the pit
and mag these moms get, they end up so edematous that their nipples are
completely flat (they're not flat prior to delivery, they report..); it's
hard to get a decent latch on, and I've noticed the babes are very very
sleepy-- hard to rouse. I've tried to explain that the edema goes away and
their nipples will return to normal soon, but most of our staff gets nervous
past 4 hours and is pushing the formula. I see a poor success rate with
these moms--very discouraging.
