I'm behind in my reading and you may be on a new subject, but I just got a
call last night (10pm) from a teen mom upset because of sore nipples and a
baby that sleeps 12 hours per day and nurses q hour when awake.  Mom's
breasts get very engorged, and baby has trouble latching on at first (no
wonder). Baby is 2 weeks old, wetting over 10 diapers, and stooling over 6
(I think she was a teen mom as she kept calling back and asking "Mom"  how
many diapers the baby had wet or stooled).

I suggested skin to skin and trying to keep the baby near the "cafeteria so
he can smell the pork chops" to see if we could get a couple of feedings in
that period.  I realize we are interfering with the baby's natural
biorhythms, but is it not better in these cases to help baby to adjust a
little to mom rather than having mom pump (which will tempt her to give it
in bottles - or grandma to), or risk sore nipples, engorgement, plugged
ducts and mastitis?

PS - I tried to e-mail this directly to Deborah, but my computer told me I
was doing something "illegal???"
