This used to come up in league toddler meetings all of the time. Even moms
committed to baby led weaning would feel 'overused'and describe children who
nursed non stop for several hours. I certainly remember it with all three
of my children. The ages varied slightly but for me between 18 months and
30 months. I took it as a hunger cue. Their needs were not being met
adequately by breastmilk. There were several ways to deal with it. The most
successful for me was to set up a small table in our bedroom and at (my)
bedtime would set out (covered) healthy snack food and drink. When I was
woken by constant nonstop feeding for an extended time (we slept with our
children and if they nursed every hour or so I barely woke) I would waken
the child fully and we would picnic. This may sound strange but it worked
and we all slept better afterwards. They were hungry but not waking enough
to recognize the feeling. Going from supper to breakfast was simply too
long. Usually our snack was fruit, crackers and cheese with water and we
usually ate at about 2-3am :) Obviously they were breastfed first and
usually tanked up a little at the end.
