I just had a very interesting conversation with my maid about Quechua
practices here in Peru. They nurse for at least a year, often 2 or 3. The
mothers rarely have problems because of support from family and their
community. I find that very interesting!
I think the frequent feedings, combined with breast massage before
nursing will help. I generally have mothers in this situation actually
massage the breast with the supporting fingers during the nursing when the
baby's sucking slows down. This seems to help stimulate the suck as well
as the flow of milk.

I have had real success with the Lactaid (email me privately for an
address). I have used it many times and find that mothers can learn to use
it correctly quite easily. I actually personally prefer it to the SNS
although I have used both.

By the way, Dr. Sears has an interesting perspective on the I Kings verse,
He says, "This could have been a case of sudden infant death syndrome. In
early days the concept of SIDS was not fully understood and was erroneously
interpreted as smotheing." (Christian Parenting and Child Care, William
Sears MD, Thomas Nelson Publishers, 1985, pp. 119-120) I don't think this
is stretching sacred Scriptures to explain this possiblity.

Hope this helps some.
Warmly,
