I was interested in the comment that "when a baby was done breastfeeding
that they were DONE".  This just hasn't been my experience.  I bf 6
children and while the longest was 16 mo, all were over a year.  It seems
that as my babies became more active toward the end of our bf time, that
some days we would nurse and some days were too busy.  Eventually the busy
days outnumbered the bf days, and then the baby was weaned.  Sometimes, I
wasn't even really aware that a week had gone by.  Granted, we were not
nursing more than 2x a day, and they weren't toddlers yet asking to nurse. 
Sometimes, when I observe extended nursing I wonder if the mother has
pushed the baby through this natural weaning time (surely to the benefit of
the babies health).  For instance a story that I am aware of (please
forgive me if this is a well known story that you have heard)  One mother
was ebf her toddler and it seemed that they always nursed when she was on
the phone.  One day when the phone rang the mother was observing her child
playing with some toys, the baby put the toys down, with a discouraged look
on his face and walked over to the mother to nurse dutifully.  Needless to
say that was the day that serious weaning began.  Like someone earlier
said, please don't throw any tomatoes at me.  I support ebf and I know that
many babies/toddlers are very keen on continuing bf into toddlerhood.  I
also extol the benefits of this. But  I  do wonder about the validity of
the above comments??
