Cathy: I had a patient with long-standing Graves' disease who had been
on PTU for years and continued throughout pregnancy. PTU
(propylthiouracil) is AAP compatible with breastfeeding. She breastfed
for months, the baby's thyroid functions were tested in the first week
postpartum mostly because of potential effects of mother's autoantibodies
on baby's thyroid. The baby thrived, his thyroid functions were
rechecked once more at about a month. This mother should be able to
breastfeed for as long as she and the baby want to. Alicia.
