Hi! I have been receiving laactnet mail for a week now and would like to
introduce myself. my name is Rosa Osorto. Iam a nurse from Honduras. I
first started working in br.fing nearly 14 years ago when I worked on a pilot
program in Honduras called PROALMA. Though I had been introduced to basic
concepts of br.f in my under grad. studies in nursing and in my grad. studies
in public health I was under the misconception that mixing bottles and breast
was ok. In Proalma I became a br.f advocte and also became aware of the
A.B.M. companies insidious promotion of arttificial milk. My job in Honduras
propared me for my own children. I br.f the first for 5 years and the second
for 3. They are 18 months apart so I was feeding them at the same time. It
was a wonderful experience for me and them. My husband was very supportive.
My first 6 years in U.SA. I was a member of la leche league and helped with
the Spanish speaking mothers. I later worked in a program for first time
parents where we promoted br.f My supervisor supported me and encouraged ne
to take the U.C.L.A.training for br. educators. I later helped develop a
Latino health Organization and tried to promote br.f through them. I
presently work as a breast-feeding specialistfor a cilic where 70% of the
clients are Latinos. It was a 20 hour a week job but the demand for help was
so high the hours had to de raised through more grant monies. I have found
excellent support from the doctors and they have made my life easier. I need
to take the I.B.L.C. test and this worries me but I can not continue to
procrastinate. I am not a great test taker. I need to get the application
forms and get done with it. Thats all about me for now.
I have a question. I have been asked by a nurse to investigate the use of
methodone and the effects on br.f The woman has been using it during
pregnacy, she is due on 4/26. She is aware of possible side effects on the
new born and wants to know if the baby can be br.f with this drug. I will be
giving an inservice Monday and would like to have some input from you guys.
You may email me direct at [log in to unmask] many thanks. Rosa Osorto
Kuschel.
