I am a family doctor in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. Jumping
into the discussion regarding pre and postnatal exposure to community
breastfeeding groups -- I recommend to all my prenatal patients an LLL
meeting before delivery. My personal feeling is that mothers who first
attend once their own baby has arrived are so overwhelmed with
everything else that's happening, especially with their own baby, that
it becomes a technical experience, and a lot of the emotional support
thats available is missed. A prospective mother (I feel) can see
everything that's happening a little better than one who has 110% of
her attention focussed on her own newborn.
I also recommend attending postpartum, but I do feel that at
least one prenatal exposure to this supportive environment can be very
helpful.
