I have been Lactnet nomail for a considerable time, but I'm back for a few
days, despite a very busy time at the moment.

This morning on radio I heard an interview with someone from Surf Aid, which
I believe is an Australian aid body funded by surfers who travel to
Indonesia for surfing. The man interviewed was also a medical doctor and
told how he had decided to visit a village while surfing in the area. He was
appalled to see many tiny graves and asked about the causes of sickness and
death in babies and small children. Malaria was the big killer, but
diarrhea and other infections were also killers, despite the devotion of
very caring parents. As these were treatable diseases, he talked with other
surfers and they established a foundation.

Among the health strategies to prevent infant deaths were mosquito nets and
anti-malarials and he specifically mentioned breastfeeding.
