Hi Lea
Have you tried baby-led attachment?  Topless mother in very reclined position.  Place baby (naked but for a nappy) face down on mother's chest, bum at sternum level or lower.  Then watch as the baby find the nipple, gape widely, drop his tongue and attach like a champ (we hope).  I have only ever seen this not work in babies with really problematic tongue ties.
